This time of year, those of us with swimming pools are getting ready to close them, if we haven’t already. However, it’s important to remember that it is not appropriate to simply run a drain hose out to the street. This allows chlorinated water to enter our stormwater system and therefore our rivers, streams and ponds. Pool water should be dechlorinated before it enters the natural environment, and the pH should also be within an acceptable range. Ideally, pool water should be slowly discharged into your yard where it can be absorbed into the ground.
